Dogs get excited over many things but nothing seems to excite them more than playing with toys and in particular catching a ball with their owner. However, a number of dog owners aren’t aware that it’s important to buy specifically colored balls for their dogs, and that the best color for these toys is often bright yellows and blues.

Latest research has discovered that dogs are red-green colour blind, meaning they cannot see these two colors clearly Instead they just see an indistinct brown. This doesn’t mean that red and green toys are a bad color for dog toys, but depending on the activity, it could be best to purchase something in a different color. If you like to play fetch with a red ball in a green garden or field, he may not be able to see the ball clearly.

Dogs in their natural habitat are crepuscular. This means that they are most active at twilight and, as a result, don’t require full colour vision. Even though pet dogs are daylight animals, their eyes have not yet evolved to adapt to their domesticated lifestyles.

The fact that dogs are red-green color blind is significant for dog-trainers who want to train canines using ball-based activities, and owners who want to play with their furry friends. If you want your dog to grab a frisbee in midair or catch a ball you’ve thrown to him, then it’s a good idea to buy a toy that is specially designed to be seen by pups in outdoor settings.

Dogs can make out shades of yellow, grays and blues. As a result of this, these are the best colors for your pup’s toys. That’s not to say that red and green colored toys can’t be seen by your dogs. They are great for indoor and independent play, since your dog will still make out a brownish yellow color. However, it’s important that you buy something that your dog can see clearly, in order to ensure that he has the best time playing with it.

If your dog is a fan of playing and you’re looking for some new toys for him, look no further. There are many different toys on the market, of all different shapes and colors and we’ve compiled a list of the 5 best colors for dog toys. Read on to find out which toys are sure to get your furry friend’s tail wagging with excitement.

1. Kong Classic Dog Toy (Red Rubber Toy)

Our Rating:
5/5

Although red isn’t a great color for balls or frisbees, it is a fantastic choice for chew toys. The Kong Classic Dog Toy is one of the most well-liked pet toys on the market and has been loved by dogs and pet owners alike for 40 years. It’s perfect for dogs, since it is mentally stimulating and a chewable product that fulfils a dogs instinctive need to munch on something.

As well as being something that a dog can chew on, this toy provides entertainment as it bounces. It’s a particularly great item for breeds of dogs who have a lot of energy and always want to play, like Labradors. The unpredictability of its rubber bounce allows the toy to be thrown and caught, but also means that dogs can enjoy playing with it alone as they can make it rebound into the air.

If your dog is a lover of treats, then you can also fill this toy up with his favorite kibble and watch him play with it for hours as he tries to extract delicious food from the toy. Don’t worry about stains or smells lingering on this toy. It’s washable and can be placed in the top shelf of your dishwasher, or hand washed using warm water and soap.

2. KONG Rubber Ball Extreme (Black Rubber Toy)

Our Rating:
5/5

As well as the Kong Classic Dog Toy mentioned above, another great Kong product is the Rubber Ball Extreme.  This is one of the best dog toys on the market, thanks to its incredible design and robustness, and makes regular tennis balls look weak in comparison. The ball is a sleek jet black color, making it an easy object for dogs to distinguish during a game of fetch, so can be thrown around in green parks or gardens.

The ball’s durability ensures that unlike regular tennis balls, your furry friend won’t easily destroy it, meaning he can get lots of use out of this toy. Made from natural rubber, this toy is safe for your pup to bite. As well as being a toy for games of catch, the material also allows this ball to be used as a chew toy. It can be a calming object for your pooch to gnaw on during periods of anxiety or stress.

If your dog likes to play with other pups, then this toy is perfect for group play dates. Due to the strength of the ball, it can be shared during outdoor games, without fear of being destroyed through dogs playing tug, and trying to steal the ball off one another. Using this ball removes all risk of having to replace it quickly, as it is built to withstand rough play and last for many months.

Kong dog toys are not only physically fantastic but they are also good for mental activity. This ball is particularly good at diverting dogs’ attention away from chewing other things within your home, since it provides a perfect material and shape for nibbling on. However, if you buy this product, it’s important to not leave your dog unsupervised with it. The ball is smaller than other dog chew toys and, although unlikely, could be a choking hazard.

3. Benebone Real Flavor Wishbone Dog Chew Toy (Brown Color)

Our Rating:
5/5

A dog bone is the archetypal dog toy, and a definite favourite among pups. Not only do dog bones have a tasty flavor that attracts dogs, but the shape is appealing to dogs, who love to spend hours chewing on them.

Dog chew toys are fantastic alternative to real dog bones,  however many companies create dog bone toys that aren’t of a good-quality. There are many products that squeak, are brightly colored and don’t have any appealing smell or taste. Often they are made in weaker materials, meaning that your dog can only enjoy them for a short period of time. This is fine for some toys, but dog bones should be of a high-standard.

Thankfully some great dog bone products exist, and the Benebone Real Flavor Wishbone Dog Chew Toy is one of the most well-liked toys on the market, for several reasons. First, it’s made of 100% real bacon, ensuring your dog will go crazy for the natural flavor. It’s also got an innovative design, as it’s shaped in a matchless curved that suits the form of your dog’s paws, enabling him to hold it properly between them in a tight and comfortable grip. When your dog can comfortably clasp a bone, it ensures that he will go on chewing it for hours.

Another benefit of this toy is that the Benebone Wishbone is long-lasting. It’s made from very strong nylon fibers meaning it is perfect for aggressive chewers. If you’re dog is particularly destructive in the house, and likes to chew on furniture, then give him this toy.  The hard-wearing material will ensure he is distracted for long periods of time and, doesn’t bite your household furnishings.

The natural brown color of the dog bone is visually great for dogs, and your pooch won’t be aware that he is actually chewing on a toy. This fantastic dog bone is great value for money and will give your pup endless hours of chewing entertainment.
